Dama

Dama is the name for the Turkish Checkers game.

Dama Features :

Dama uses the same board that chess or any other checkers game uses. It is not important that the board is two colored. There are 16 number of pieces (2 rows of pieces) for both sides. There are two types of pieces : regular pieces and Dama (king) pieces.

Turkish checkers is fundamentally different from all other form of checkers. Although the board and number of pieces resemble western checkers and draughts, the similarities are not any further.

Firstly the starting positions skips the first rows from each side.

Movement of regular pieces :

Regular pieces can only move forwards, and sideways. They can not move diagonally. When they reach the last row they get promoted 'Dama' pieces.

Capturing of opponents for regular pieces :

Regular pieces capture any adjacent opponent piece by jumping over it. They can not skip any empty squares when capturing. They can not go backwards when capturing. If there are more opponent pieces to capture after the capturing move, these movements should also be completed. This combined capturing move is considered as one move in Dama. It does not switch turns in middle of this combined move.

An important rule is that the regular pieces remains as a regular piece through out all of this combined move. So even if it reaches to the last row, it does not get promoted to Dama in the middle of the move.

Movement of Dama pieces :

Dama pieces can move to all four directions as many as there are blank squares. They can not move diagonally.

Capturing of opponents for Dama pieces :

Dama pieces can capture any opponent piece by jumping over it. Just like regular pieces, if there are more opponent pieces to capture after the capturing move, these movements should also be completed. This combined capturing move is considered as one move in Dama.

However, there is one important rule. Dama piece can not continue capturing in the opposite direction, i.e. it must do a 90 degree turn when continuing capturing, it can not do a 180 degree turn. It can not go forward capture and then go backwards capture. It must make a corner when continuing capturing.

Compulsory maximum captures :

In Dama each is obliged to take the move that captures the maximum number of opponent pieces. If a side makes a move that does not capture the maximum number of possible pieces, this move must be taken back.

In real life Dama game the referee of this is the opponent, and the opponent reserves the right to not correct this, but in this computer game the maximum number of captures is judged by the computer, and the user is always corrected and warned for the maximum captures.

The loser and winner :

The loser is the party who can not make any moves any more (i.e. either all pieces are blocked or all pieces are captured). The winner is the other side.

Draw rules :

There can be many draw rules. The basic rule is that it is a draw when opponents agree that it is a draw. A basic draw rule that is forced is the following: when both sides only have one Dama piece, and nothing changes after 3 consecutive moves, it is a draw.

Promoting last 3 pieces to Dama :

When junior players play Dama, they can agree to make the last remaining 3 pieces to be promoted to Dama. This is not the normal Dama rule, so this option is provided in preferences menu, with default being it is turned off.

Sounds :

Game sounds can be turned on and off from the preferences menu

One player mode :
